The Lyon County Sheriff’s Department is composed of three entities: Law Enforcement, Dispatch/Communications, and Jail/Detention.

 

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Department is located in Rock Rapids.  The Sheriff’s Department is responsible for law enforcement in all towns located within Lyon County which include: Alvord, Doon, George, Inwood, Larchwood, Lester, Little Rock, Rock Rapids and the unincorporated towns of: Beloit, Edna,  Granite, and Klondike.  

LAW ENFORCEMENT

DISPATCH / COMMUNICATIONS

The Lyon County Dispatch is located within the Law Enforcement Center.  The dispatch center is staffed 24 hours/365 days a year.  They are responsible for all non-emergency phone calls and 911 phone calls. The communication center dispatches for the Lyon County Deputies. They enter missing persons, stolen property, recovered property, warrants, detainers, stolen vehicles, citations, and accident reports into the system.  The dispatch also pages out all area fire and rescue teams as needed. Along with dispatch duties, the dispatchers issue gun permits, perform pager tests, monitors alarms, answer after hour calls for Rural Electric, L & O Power, and Lyon and Sioux Water.  Dispatchers are typically the first point of contact when a person comes to the Sheriff’s Department.

IOWA SHERIFF 

The Sheriff’s Department consists of Sheriff Stewart VanderStoep, Chief Deputy Jerry Birkey, and ten full time sworn officers.  They are responsible for the patrol of all towns and the county within Lyon County.  The officers investigate crimes, execute search warrants, patrol, investigate accidents, serve civil process and court papers, and respond to non-emergency and emergency calls from the public.

The Lyon County Jail is located within the Law Enforcement Center.  The Jail is responsible for all inmates brought into the facility by Deputies, State Troopers, Local Police, Federal Agents, DNR, and DCI Agents.  The jail houses inmates from the local area, holds inmates for other agencies on warrants, and also houses federal inmates.  The jail is staffed 24 hours a day and may be contacted at (712) 472-8356. The jail is designed to hold 26 inmates which are segregated into male/female, federal, work release, general population, holding cell, detox cell, and special status.
